About This Place

Nestled in the heart of New Haven, Somos Handcrafted Arepas brings an authentic taste of Latin American cuisine with a fresh Nuevo Latino and Venezuelan twist. Located at 63 Orange Street, this vibrant restaurant offers a warm, inviting atmosphere where the enticing aromas of freshly prepared arepas and cachapas greet you the moment you walk in.

Somos is a celebration of handcrafted flavors, specializing in arepas – those beloved Venezuelan corn pockets bursting with savory fillings. Popular choices include the Herbed Chorizo Arepa, packed with a delightful blend of seasoned protein, fresh seasonal vegetables, and melty cheese. For a classic, the Arepa Pulled Chicken Sandwich accented with garlic aioli and pickled onions provides a luscious balance of smoky and tangy notes. One cannot miss the Arepa de Carne Mechada con Queso Amarillo, where tender shredded beef mingles expertly with rich yellow cheese, creating an irresistible bite.

Beyond arepas, the menu shines with its cachapas – traditional semisweet corn pancakes often described as "the upgraded quesadilla." Whether you opt for the tender Carne Mechada cachapa or the plant-based Tofu Sofrito version, each is a luscious, slightly sweet canvas layered with flavorful fillings. Fans rave about the Pork Carnitas Cachapa, which offers tender, slow-cooked pork enveloped in the corn pancake’s warmth, perfect for those seeking deeply comforting, hearty flavors.

One of the standout aspects of Somos is their attention to detail in fresh accompaniments and thoughtful beverage selections. Freshly squeezed juices like passion fruit, guava, and mango complement the savory dishes with their tropical brightness, while a thoughtfully curated salad bar adds freshness and balance. The garlic aioli and Guasaca sauces are customer favorites, lovingly crafted to elevate each dish with a burst of zesty richness.

Guests appreciate the naturally gluten-free nature of the arepas, making it an inclusive dining choice. Many reviewers note the friendly, attentive service – Giovanni, for instance, won over first-timers with personalized recommendations and genuine hospitality, helping them navigate the flavor-packed menu with confidence.

While some suggest warming or toasting the arepas after filling to soften the cheese and intensify the warmth of the meat, the overall experience is one of bright, bold, and authentic Latin flavors made with care. The dining space is clean, comfortable, and ideal for savoring each bite either solo or with friends. Whether craving the sweet-savory contrast of the traditional cachapas or the rich, meaty layers of the pulled pork arepa, Somos Handcrafted Arepas offers a unique culinary journey through Venezuela’s vibrant street food culture — right in New Haven.

For anyone exploring Latin cuisine or seeking naturally gluten-free options with rich, soulful flavor, Somos Handcrafted Arepas is a must-visit destination. Their handcrafted creations promise an enjoyable and satisfying experience that keeps guests coming back for more.

My meal was good and flavourful. I appreciated that they had a vide variety of toppings including sweet Plantain. Their was a nice juice selection, their passion fruit juice was good. The service was good and the space was clean. Do wish they would toast after it's filled to warm up the meat and for the cheese to be a little melted. Would recommend for people looking for naturally gluten free items.

Really good arepas. I had the pabellon one. Just a tip: if you dont put any sauce, it will feel dry. I recommend the garlic sauce!

Highly recommend creating your own! But must start with the Cachapa!!! Sweet corn arepas are just as good if not better than the Yale colombian arepas cart by the Peabody. An now you can get them at any point of time!!! Any whoo! Cachapa and Carne Mechada is my go too! Get w.e. toppings you'd like an ask for the Garlic Aioli an the Guasaca as sauces. It goes great with the carne mechada! Enjoy. If you want the replica of my order as the photo shows: Cachapa Carne Mechada More corn Plantains Pickled onions Queso Blanco (Sauces Not spicy...but has Cilantro) Garlic aioli Guasaca I recommend dinning in because the sauces are as you can see are given with love. If you take out you may want to ask for more sauce if you end up enjoying it as much as I did. Thank you so much for opening up!

Incredible food! I could eat cachapas for every meal - love the variety of sauces and they can be mixed and matched for awesome flavor combos. The Tequeños are also delicious

We tried to go to another restaurant on the street, but it turned out to be closed. An employee there suggested we try Somos, and we are glad they did! This place is amazing. I’d describe is a small, family owned Venezuelan version of Chipotle with super fresh food. I had no idea what to order, but the owner was kind enough to help us with our selections. It was amazing. I’ve never had a cachapa before and now I’m craving them. I’m sorry Sally and Mr. Pepe, but I’ll be visiting this restaurant every time I’m in New Haven from now on.
